Three Transitions (1973)
Peter Campus
4:57
Medium: Analog Video
Art Type: Single Channel Video
Experimenting with blue screen technology of the time, Peter Campus created three different video transformations of himself. First he shows himself with his back to the camera and facing a wall. His suit and the wall are the same color. He makes a stabbing motion towards the wall and you see a knife protrude from his back, followed by a long slice. Eventually he sticks his hand and entire upper body through the hole, but you see him coming out of his own back. He then closes the hole and tapes the wall back together. In the second manipulation the frame is a close shot of his face. He begins to rub his face with a material, erasing the image and revealing another image of himself underneath. Lastly he is holding a small mirror, that is reflecting an image of himself, and he lights it on fire and allows it to burn away.
